Today we could be found in Accrington, for Paul’s 60th Birthday celebration, which was held down at Accrington Cricket Club.
110 made it to the event — lots of friends and family all coming together to celebrate Paul’s birthday. The weather wasn’t great, again, but it didn’t deter anyone from having a great time. The atmosphere was great. From the start, it was exactly what you want at an event like this.
We arrived 3 hours before the requested serve time of 10 pm, got the hog roasting straight away as usual, the gazebo and tables were set up in no time and we were ready for service. It takes us around 20 minutes from arriving to be fully set up. Once people started arriving and the smell of the hog roast filled the open space, it didn’t take long before guests began gathering around.
The smell of the hog has a talent for drawing guests in. There’s something about seeing the hog cooking and knowing what’s coming that gets everyone talking. And without fail, we get the usual question: “So, how long has this been cooking then?”
Serve time came around quickly, and the queue was soon building. Guests were coming back for seconds (and sometimes thirds), which is always a good sign. The crackling went down especially well — as it usually does — and there were plenty of comments about the quality of the meat and how fresh everything tasted. The homemade coleslaw always has guests asking for the recipe. That’s a guarantee at every event. The secret is just quality fresh cabbage, carrots and onion mixed with an organic mayonnaise. All from our local farm shop.
We’ve done quite a few events like this across Accrington and nearby areas such as Oswaldtwistle, Great Harwood and Blackburn, and it’s always the same response — everyone loves it
What stands out about events like this in Accrington is how relaxed they are. People aren’t stuck at tables waiting — they’re up and about, chatting, eating when they fancy, and just having a good time. It creates a much better atmosphere compared to more formal catering.
