How Much Food Do You Need for a Hog Roast? (Real Numbers from Events)
This is one of the most common questions we get asked, and it’s a fair one. Nobody wants to run out of food, but at the same time, you don’t want to massively overdo it either.
The honest answer is, it depends on the type of event, but after doing this for years, you start to get a very good feel for what works.
HOW MUCH HOG ROAST PER PERSON?
As a guide, for around 100 guests we would usually use a 60kg pig.
You could get away with a 50kg pig and still feed 100 people just fine. But we don’t like running things tight or just right.
We’d rather have it so:
- Everyone gets a proper portion
- People can go back for seconds
- And there’s no worry about it running out
After doing this for years, we know it’s better to have it plentiful than to cut it fine.
You can never guarantee an exact size hog when ordering anyway, so we always allow for that when planning.
It’s not just about the numbers. It’s about the type of event.
IT DEPENDS ON THE EVENT
Weddings
People tend to eat well, but not everyone goes back for seconds. There’s more going on: drinks, talking, etc. They have generally had antipasto starters and are ready for desserts.
👉 250g per person works perfectly.
Private Parties
Different story. People are more relaxed, they come back for seconds (and thirds), and the food is a bigger part of the day.
👉 You’ll go through more food at a party than at a wedding.
Evening Events
If it’s later in the day, people are usually drinking, and the food becomes even more important.
👉 Always better to have a bit extra.
WHAT PEOPLE DON’T THINK ABOUT
It’s not just the pork.
You’ve also got:
- Bread rolls
- Stuffing
- Apple sauce
- Sides (if included)
All of that adds up and fills people up.
We’ve done plenty of events where people worry there won’t be enough, and in the end, there’s more than plenty once everything is on the plate.
REAL EXAMPLE
We recently catered for around 80 guests at a private event.
The hog was sized to comfortably cover everyone, and as expected:
- Most people had one good portion
- Plenty came back for seconds
- And there was still enough left over at the end
That’s how we always aim to do it. Nobody leaves hungry, and the host isn’t worrying all day about running out.
IS IT BETTER TO HAVE TOO MUCH?
In short, yes.
You can’t quickly cook more if you run out, but if there’s extra:
- It gets eaten later
- Guests often take some home
- Or the host keeps it, it’s freezable
We always say it’s better to have a bit too much than not enough, especially for bigger events.
WHAT WE DO
When we’re booked, we don’t just guess it.
We look at:
- number of guests
- type of event
- time of day
- whether sides are included
Then we size the hog properly based on that.
After doing this for years, it’s something we’ve got spot on.
