We’ve found Nelson to be very similar to other Lancashire towns, similar to Colne, Burnley and the like. People don’t want anything too over the top. Rigid in structure, most events are relaxed, whether it’s a function room, a back garden, or just a venue allowing outdoor catering.

We’ve catered at a few places around Nelson over the years, and it’s always the same. Once the hog gets roasting, people soon start drifting over. We did an event at Nelson cricket club, just off the side of the M65, and the number of guests around the hog must have been a record!

You can almost see it happen, someone catches the smell, then another, and before long there’s a small crowd forming. It is funny to see. Then the cameras come out along with all the questions. “How long has this been roasting mate” is the main one.

IT GETS PEOPLE TALKING (AND EATING)

One thing we always notice with hog roast events is the atmosphere.

Instead of people being stuck at tables waiting, everyone is up and about:

  • chatting while the hog is roasting
  • grabbing food when they fancy, not sat waiting for it
  • going back for seconds (which they always do)

 

It just creates a better feel to the whole event.

We’ve seen it loads of times, especially at birthdays and weddings, people relax more, move around more, and just enjoy themselves.

That’s what it’s all about really.

WHAT MAKES IT WORK SO WELL

  • food served fresh
  • guests eat when they want, no portion control, just help themselves to the salads
  • a relaxed, social atmosphere

 

There’s no pressure, just good food and people enjoying themselves.

  • crispy crackling every time
  • fresh rolls baked on the day

That’s all people really want, plenty of good food, done properly.
